Adam Fuchs Fires 2-Under 70 to Win 2014 Jamaica Open Pro

Adam Fuchs, 32 of Plainview, NY, posted three birdies and only one bogey Monday en route to a 2-under-par 70 at Marine Park Golf Course to capture the inaugural Jamaica Open New York Championship.

Fuchs won the professional division by one shot over Jae Kwon of Palisades Park, N.J. Fuchs played on the Florida mini tour circuit but now helps his father-in-law operate a lumber business in Avenel, N.J. Two weeks ago he finished runner-up in the New York State Open held on Bethpage Black.

His near flawless round included hitting 14 of 18 greens and 13 of 14 fairways. Fuchs received a winner’s check of $1,650 Monday at Marine Park. Fuchs and his wife are expecting their first child in six weeks.

``This will buy me a lot of diapers,’’ Fuchs said afterward. ``Since this is the first Jamaica Open it’s always nice to have your name on the first one.’’

Isaac Addo of the Bronx was the low amateur with a 4-over 76. Ninety-seven players participated in the Jamaica Open which was sponsored by the Alsion Roach Group of New York.

`` Yesterday after the tournament every single golfer came up to me and said they would register for next year’s Jamaica Open and they would all bring golfers with them,’’ said Alsion Roach, whose group hosted a ``Reggae on the Green” party the night before at Marine Park. ``I really like this community and this is an excellent golf course.

``A lot of people drive past the golf course every day and they never stop in. It’s like you’re at Bethpage. The Marine Park team of Mike Giordano and his staff are phenomenal.”

The shot of the day came from 56-year-old engineer Bob Buss of Queens. One of two players randomly selected to take a shot for a $1 million challenge from 150 yards on the 18^th hole, Buss, facing a strong wind, used a 6-iron. His attempt for the major payday was dead on line only to stop five feet short of the cup.

``When it was in the air I said to myself, `This is looking good,’ ’’ Buss said smiling moments after coming so close to claiming the $1 million.

Jamaica Consul General Herman Lamont, former Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness, New York State Senator Kevin Parker and New York Assemblyman Nick Perry were on hand for the award ceremony.
